Abstract: Carl Warburton's 'Buffaloes: Life and Adventure in Arnhem Land' recounts the author's exploits as a buffalo hunter in the Top End of Australia's Northern Territory during the early 1920s. First published in 1934 by Angus and Robertson Ltd. in Sydney (at 6 shillings a copy) and again in 1944 by Consolidated Press Ltd., 'Buffaloes' struck a chord with Australia's metropolitans. Its story of adventure, mateship and freedom massaged the escapist yearnings of a society torn by economic depression and total war, and stirred a persistent curiosity and anxiety about Australia's "unknown North."
