Title: | The Impact of Mining Expenditure on Remote Communities in Australia: The Ranger Uranium Mine and the Tanami Gold Mine in the Northern Territory | Contributor(s): | Blackwell, Boyd (author) ; Dollery, Brian E (author) | Publication Date: | 2014 | Handle Link: | https://hdl.handle.net/1959.11/15311 | Abstract: | While the recent mining boom has been widely addressed in the literature, to date little effort has been devoted to assessing how the returns from mining spatially affect local and remote communities. Given the paucity of adequate data at the local and remote levels, in this article we adopt a factor share approach and find that mining companies in the Northern Territory provide benefits to local communities through their employment of land, labour and capital which translate into expenditure and essential services for the local economy. Moreover, mining companies assist remote communities to develop a social network with external parties which can assist in building enduring value. | Publication Type: | Journal Article | Source of Publication: | Australasian Journal of Regional Studies, 20(1), p. 68-97 | Publisher: | Australia and New Zealand Regional Science Association International Inc (ANZRSAI) | Place of Publication: | Australia | ISSN: | 1324-0935 | Fields of Research (FoR) 2008: | 160509 Public Administration | Fields of Research (FoR) 2020: | 440708 Public administration | Socio-Economic Objective (SEO) 2008: | 940204 Public Services Policy Advice and Analysis | Socio-Economic Objective (SEO) 2020: | 230204 Public services policy advice and analysis | Peer Reviewed: | Yes | HERDC Category Description: | C1 Refereed Article in a Scholarly Journal | Publisher/associated links: | http://anzrsai.org/publications/ajrs/ |
