Mass literacy campaigns, once a common feature of anti-colonial independence movements, are again occurring in many countries of the Global South. In Australia, a group of Aboriginal leaders are investigating the feasibility of mounting such a campaign in their communities, where very low rates of English-language literacy have become a major obstacle to self-determination. This paper reports on an initial pilot study in a remote Aboriginal community, using the Cuban 'Yes I Can' mass adult literacy campaign model.en
