Abstract

This book examines the state of development management in the context of changed and changing circumstances within developing countries and the international environment. Traditionally, development has been rooted in ideologies and assumptions prevalent in the developed world and in practices and strategies adopted by leading industrial nations. However, eclectic ideas and approaches often clashed with existing long-established notions of progress and modes of realizing social and economic change. The objectives of development, thus, remained unfulfilled. Decolonization, followed by new sociopolitical and economic realities that resulted in democratization and globalization, has rendered traditional tools and practices of development management inadequate and impracticable, if not obsolete. ... This book seeks to shed light on the concepts, processes, strategies, and institutions of development in a rapidly changing world by incorporating ideas and interpretations that have been previously neglected or given inadequate attention in the discourse on developing countries. Development is a continuous process and must be supported by sound policies and efficient management. The application of innovative development techniques and best practices is essential to obtain optimum results in meeting the needs of society. The book examines the style of managing development with a new perspective that links the phenomenon with changing demands and the interplay of internal/external actors and a host of stakeholders. It assesses real-world situations and provides insight into the operational dynamics of development policies, programs, and institutions. As far as practicable, theoretical/conceptual and empirical literature has been carefully synthesized.
