This paper explores management challenges facing universities in supporting innovation and knowledge transfer in mass systems of higher education. More specifically, it focuses on university research links with industry and research commercialisation, drawing particularly on Australian experience but also referring to developments elsewhere. Major emphasis is given to the experience and perspectives of Australian university science and technology academics and specialist technology transfer and research management staff, based on survey research conducted between 1997 and 2005. The contribution of research commercialisation to regional economic development is outside the scope of the paper.en
