Title: | Participation, Democracy, and the Split in Revolutionary Calvinism, 1641 - 1646 | Contributor(s): | Moore, Tod (author); Maddox, W G (author) | Publication Date: | 2010 | Handle Link: | https://hdl.handle.net/1959.11/10028 | Abstract: | During the early phase of the revolutionary period in Britain (1641-46) an ideological divergence took place between fractions labelled Independent and Presbyterian. Our study of printed sources for this period uses debates over the meaning and relevance of the Greek term "democracy" to attempt a mapping of these emergent ideologies within revolutionary Calvinism. We find a contested social terrain with the Presbyterians supporting the revolutions from a socially conservative position and the Independents favouring radical social change. | Publication Type: | Journal Article | Source of Publication: | Nebula, 7(4), p. 103-113 | Publisher: | Samar Habib, Pub | Place of Publication: | Australia | ISSN: | 1449-7751 | Fields of Research (FoR) 2008: | 160609 Political Theory and Political Philosophy | Socio-Economic Objective (SEO) 2008: | 970116 Expanding Knowledge through Studies of Human Society | Peer Reviewed: | Yes | HERDC Category Description: | C1 Refereed Article in a Scholarly Journal | Publisher/associated links: | http://www.nobleworld.biz/images/Moore_Maddox.pdf |
