Curated Or Produced Substantial Public Exhibitions And Events - Exhibition/eventPublication 12 THREADS(2021-06-19); City of Sydney: Australia'12 THREADS' was a performance event of three newly developed and commissioned Australian art songs which presented contemporary stories, perspectives and thoughts from diverse Australian female artists.
12 THREADS utilised an innovative curatorial technique where 12 artists from diverse disciplines were brought together to collaborate on three new musical and vocal works. The project moved against the dominant composition process where the composer is seen as the central author of new music. In this project, vocalists, instrumentalists, writers, and composers were all equal contributors to the scope, focus, themes, and final aesthetic of the songs. Initial workshops encouraged collaboration and cross-disciplinary knowledge. The project drew on three types of writer, with the musicians collaborating across forms including poetry, prose fiction, and playwriting. The performances were all pairs of one singer and one instrumentalist and the work contributes to the Australia repertoire for cello, flute and recorder.

Curated Or Produced Substantial Public Exhibitions And Events - Exhibition/eventPublication The Art of AgricultureIn the antique Roman calendar, February 4th was the official first day of spring and marked the recommencement of agricultural activity. In the revised ancient Roman calendar February 7th heralded the commencement of spring. In Armidale, February marks the change from stone fruit to apple season. Under these auspices, the UNE Museum of Antiquities (UNEMA) and Greenhills Orchards (an 8th generation family farm and the last remaining commmerical orchard in the New England), collaborated to create an interactive exhibition in 2D and 3D reflecting on the ancient and modern Art of Agriculture. Held in Armidale from 4-7th February 2019, the exhibition consisted of diorama recreating ancient Roman garlands of flowers and ox skulls (bucrania), intertwined with edible stone fruit from Greenhills Orchards. The diorama were accompanied by an original photographic display of agricultural life at Greenhills Orchard juxtaposed with excerpts from ancient Roman agricultural treatises, to provide a literary, pictorial, and gastronomic dialogue discussing the rhythm and values of agricultural life on the ancient and modern family farm.

Curated Or Produced Substantial Public Exhibitions And Events - Exhibition/eventPublication Global Warning Art Exhibition(Dr Marty Branagan, 2015)Branagan, MartyThis 2015 Original Creative Work exhibited 12 mixed media artworks about anthropogenic global warming (AGW), at Armidale's Woodlands Centre, an event of ANZSEE's Conference, 'Thriving Through Transformation' & SLA's 'Road to Paris' campaign. AGW is widely regarded as the planet's gravest problem, yet the necessary mass mitigation actions are yet to happen, partly because traditional scientific & political communication is not adequate alone for this unprecedented challenge. The arts can effectively raise awareness of the problems; stimulate solutions-based reflection, discussion & action at individual & community levels; & bring beauty & optimism to a disturbing issue. Featuring artworks created over 10 years, with multiple layers & possible interpretations, synthesising pictorially the artist's AGW research since 1984, it conveyed complex information in innovative & aesthetically-pleasing ways, covering interconnected themes such as individual responsibility for AGW; personal empowerment; the nature of social change; energy & food consumption; transport; colonialism, Aboriginal dispossession & their environmental impacts; emotional & psychological responses to AGW; intergenerational equity; steady state instead of growth-based economics; political choices; civil disobedience; & noncooperation, divestment & ethical investment. Significantly, the project overcame barriers to engagement with AGW mitigation planning, including inaccessibility of technical information, complexity, apathy, feelings of powerlessness, activist burnout, & 'issue fatigue'. It brought 130 people & a school art class to an eco-venue to reflect collectively on action options; generate new concepts & understandings with practical applications; & dramatise EcoArts Australis & Armidale Tree Group's role in combatting biodiversity loss (& raising $1155). It publicised the Paris climate summit, using traditional & social media.2900 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Curated Or Produced Substantial Public Exhibitions And Events - Exhibition/eventPublication The Holga Experiment(2022)This body of creative work is inspired by a little blue book written by Garcia and Miralles titled ‘Ikigai: The Japanese Secret to a Long and Happy Life’. The Holga Experiment was a project developed as a way for me, as an artist, to explore a different creative approach. It stripped out all complex photography equipment to a bare camera body and an inexpensive toy camera lens. This method of practice allowed a more personal and focussed view on how important practicing art and photography is to me personally. It drew me closer to a more autobiographical connection with the space I inhabit and photography as a creative practice. Using the Japanese philosophical perspective, I was able to explore this concept of Ikigai - my purpose in life! The work also promotes an additional form of Japanese philosophy with the notions of Wabi-Sabi. Wabi-Sabi is an early Zen Buddhist concept that was first developed during tea ceremonies. It is a concept of finding beauty within imperfection and its self-reflection of life’s quality with all its turbulence as a distraction from purpose. The optical artefacts in this work are produced organically using a plastic toy lens fitted to a digital camera body. The inexpensive Holga lens aids in producing a form of the Holga aesthetic now synonymous with this type of toy film camera.169 23 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Curated Or Produced Substantial Public Exhibitions And Events - Exhibition/eventPublication I see imagesLinguistic approaches restrict possible alternatives to engage audiences in other ways of knowing and include other communities of practice. Arts-based research allowed me to combine my roles as a researcher and artist to describe, interpret and make meaning of the mentors and my experiences as a critical friend from our work together during two participatory action research studies. Crossing the boundary to communicate knowledge production through a variety of visual arts media, "I see images", is a collection of artworks that reify my growing understanding, ongoing learning and identity development as a critical friend. Curated to explore the processes, context and influences that underpin the artworks, my exhibition, "I see images" provides an experience that engages the audience in visual, linguistic and auditory ways of knowing. Furthermore it provides the audience with a unique insight into my cognitive processes of material and symbolic use to create the artworks.3839 3 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Curated Or Produced Substantial Public Exhibitions And Events - Exhibition/eventPublication Imagining SpaceImagining Space was a jointly curated exhibition held at the New England Regional Art Museum (NERAM) that included 35 artworks chosen from the NERAM collections. Sculptures and installations were specially constructed for the gallery space and the exhibition explored different interpretations of artistic and mental space. The artistic material was divided into five sections: Delineating Space, Intersecting Space, Ephemeral Space, Inhabiting Space, and Psychological Space. An introductory didactic panel that outlined the ideas behind the five particular themes accompanied each of these five sections within the gallery space to encourage different ways of seeing. In examining how space is used artistically, this curated exhibition provided insight into the nature of artistic expression and an understanding of how artworks can redefine our perceptions of the world.2786 2 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Curated Or Produced Substantial Public Exhibitions And Events - Exhibition/eventPublication SubakThe Artplay project around the Subak exhibition developed a pioneering model for productive and sustainable relationships between Early Childhood programs and Art Museums. This model sought to celebrate not simply children's capacities for art making in response to encounters with gallery artworks, but to celebrate children as original thinkers and explorers, and demonstrate how art making can be integral to children's lives. In so doing, the program stimulates interest in the whole art making process, a process that to novice adult gallery visitors can be quite mysterious. Teachers and parents from a selected preschool in Armidale were invited to participate in this pilot project. They were encouraged to observe and record their children's participation, contribution of ideas, and subsequent responses at home and at school. An archive of this documentation was produced, which together with analysis from art educators became a valuable resource for the gallery and teachers working with young children and art museums. An exhibition was developed that aimed at raising public understanding about young children and artists so that children and families and teachers are encouraged to form lasting relationships with art museums. A documentary film maker recorded the interactions between the children, artists, teachers and families. The processes involved in engaging young children with art, artists and art museums in meaningful ways were recorded so that these recordings might become valuable resources for teachers and those working with young children and art museums. Supplementary material to the video can provide links to the Early Years Learning Framework. The preschool worked with NERAM and artists and arts educators Christine McMillan, Margaret Brooks over a five week period around an exhibition of these artists work. (Artist's exhibition date at NERAM April 6th - May 26th, 2012). The artists engaged the teachers, parents and children in explorations of their artwork, media and ideas so that they were able to experience first hand the huge potential and possibilities for working with young children and the arts. The arts are essential and integral to the way young children explore and make sense of their world. The program will focus on early childhood art education, the role of the family, teachers and community in the social, cultural and artistic development of the child. My artwork for the exhibition included drawings and two installations made specially for this exhibition.2515 1 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Curated Or Produced Substantial Public Exhibitions And Events - Exhibition/eventPublication The University of New England Schools Acquisitive Art Prize (UNESAP) and Let's Hang It! ExhibitionThe 2014 art exhibition featured a retrospective view of a decade of this unique art event. The exhibition offered a showcase of works by the winners (and runners up) representing each year that the exhibition has been held (first exhibition held in 2004). The retrospective exhibit included 20 works that were chosen by Dr Frances Alter (artistic director) and Ms Michelle Arens (UNE art curator) from amongst nearly 50 exemplary youth artworks currently placed in the University of New England's Art Collection. To mark the retrospective event the exhibition included a summary of textual information gathered in the course of research into the scope and reach of UNESAP as well as the life trajectories of the talented former winners of the UNESAP art prize who have since graduated from high school. A university funded research project undertaken by Dr Frances Alter in 2013 and 2014 titled, the Social Legacy of UNESAP, investigated the life experiences and careers of former winners and finalists aged 19 to 28 years of age. This research focused on assessing participants continued engagement with the Arts - specifically the visual arts. The findings of the research noted that in their post school years, a far higher percentage of former winners had undertaken tertiary Arts study and work in arts-based careers than is reported in the Australian national census data (2012) for study and career choices amongst 18 to 29 year old Australians.2866 1 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
