As the heart ejects blood with each beat, a closed system of blood vessels transports oxygenated blood to all body organs and tissues, then returns deoxygenated blood to the heart for reoxygenation in the lungs. The blood components are the haematological system, and the branching network of vessels is the peripheral vascular system: the arteries, veins and capillaries. The lymphatic system is a special vascular system that helps maintain sufficient blood volume in the cardiovascular system by picking up excess tissue fluid and returning it to the bloodstream.en
