Abstract: The aim of this chapter is to provide an overall scaffold for the portfolio. Initially, the personal background of the author is discussed to give the reader an understanding of the perspective from which the writing emerges. This encompasses personal history and professional experience. The rationale for the research project presents the statistics which support my personal observations of disadvantage. It also outlines the focus of my work and some of my perspectives on interpreting the causes of Aboriginal marginalisation in Australian society. The structure of the portfolio and the relationship of the chapters are outlined. Research questions formulated to guide the research process are provided and the research paradigm and methods adopted are discussed.
