dc.description.abstract
ACON's Multicultural Engagement Plan was developed as a response to ACON's lack of engagement with LGBTQ people from culturally, linguistically, and ethnically diverse, migrant and refugee backgrounds, and LGBTQ people of colour. ACON also identified a lack of data around the intersectional health needs of these people and communities. The Consultation process involved ACON working with LGBTQ people from culturally, linguistically, and ethnically diverse, migrant and refugee backgrounds, and LGBTQ people of colour to better understand and reflect on ACON's historical engagement with these communities, and build stronger relationships in our current and future work. Led by an external research consultant, Dr Christina Kenny, and members of an ACON working group in February 2021, the consultations were a combination of interviews and focus groups with stakeholders from these communities as well as service providers and peak bodies. The interview process guaranteed that all focus group sessions, and any notes produced during those session would remain confidential. This approach was chosen to ensure that community members could speak freely about their experiences.

The project aimed to develop strategies to increase health equity and outcomes for these communities, and to improve inclusion, career advancement and leadership of ACON staff from these backgrounds. The program was underpinned by five principles: Equity, Intersectionality, Participation and representation" Accountability" and Anti-Racism.
en
