Abstract: I hope that what follows may be useful for those working in development; for those contemplating moving beyond development; for those who manage development; and for university managers more generally. First, this chapter looks back on my own and other developers' experiences, from the inside, seeking some further understanding of the nature of development. Second, and still under the heading 'looking back at development', it merges into consideration of development from the outside, and more particularly from the perspective of university management. Third, it looks forward, to consider what developers have to offer an organization if or when they move on from a development role. Hence 'Development and beyond'.
