Abstract: The reconstruction of past population and demographic behaviour inevitably relies on church records, on civil registration and, especially in North America, on census manuscripts. While these sources provide an indispensable core for the discipline, complementary information from other nominal sources can extend our knowledge of demographic structures and processes in useful ways. Particularly interesting is the rich personal detail found in prison registers.
