The contribution of music therapy to the process of therapeutic change for people receiving hospital care

Abstract

Qualified music therapists can offer an important professional service within health care teams responding to the medical and psychosocial needs of people of all ages who are receiving care in a hospital. Music therapy interventions can address needs for relaxation, social interaction, reduction of anxiety, and creative self-expression. Music is a flexible and creative medium that lends itself gently and non-intrusively to the care and support of patients from many backgrounds and circumstances. This chapter provides introductory information on the profession of music therapy, its training, and therapeutic process.
