Qualified music therapists can offer an important professional service within health care teams responding to the medical and psychosocial needs of people of all ages who are receiving care in a hospital. Music therapy interventions can address needs for relaxation, social interaction, reduction of anxiety, and creative self-expression. Music is a flexible and creative medium that lends itself gently and non-intrusively to the care and support of patients from many backgrounds and circumstances. This chapter provides introductory information on the profession of music therapy, its training, and therapeutic process.en
