Keeping Creoles and Dialects Out of the Classroom: Is It Justified?

Abstract

• Critical examination of barring Creoles and dialects from the classroom. • Discussion of four categories of reasons for resisting vernacular use in the classroom: (1) beliefs about the nature of vernacular varieties, (2) misconceptions about the nature of educational programs using vernacular varieties, (3) concerns about the detrimental effects of using the vernacular in school, (4) scepticism about the value and practicality of alternative practices. • Analyses of instrumental, accommodation, and awareness programs related to teaching speakers of nonstandard dialects of English. • Reviews of studies on vernacular use. • Benefits of using vernacular varieties in the classroom.
