Title: | The origins of postverbal negation in Kuki-Chin | Contributor(s): | Delancey, Scott (author) | Publication Date: | 2015 | Open Access: | Yes | Handle Link: | https://hdl.handle.net/1959.11/20568 | Open Access Link: | http://hdl.handle.net/1885/95392 | Abstract: | Tibeto-Burman languages in and around North East India tend to show innovative negation constructions. Most other languages in the family retain the negative prefix *ma- which is reconstructed for Proto-Tibeto-Burman, but in North East India the negative morpheme is usually post-verbal. In the Kuki-Chin languages we see several innovative negators: *mak, *law, #kay, and *no, all occurring following the lexical verb. The ngeator *mak appears to reflect an old auxiliary negated with the original prefix. The other forms all represent recent grammaticalizations of negative existentials or other semantically negative lexical verbs. | Publication Type: | Book Chapter | Source of Publication: | North East Indian Linguistics 7 (NEIL 7), p. 203-212 | Publisher: | Asia-Pacific Linguistics | Place of Publication: | Canberra, Australia | ISBN: | 9781922185273 | Fields of Research (FoR) 2008: | 209999 Language, Communication and Culture not elsewhere classified | Fields of Research (FoR) 2020: | 450199 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, language and history not elsewhere classified | Socio-Economic Objective (SEO) 2008: | 959999 Cultural Understanding not elsewhere classified | Socio-Economic Objective (SEO) 2020: | 139999 Other culture and society not elsewhere classified | HERDC Category Description: | B1 Chapter in a Scholarly Book | Publisher/associated links: | http://trove.nla.gov.au/version/222574761 | Editor: | Editor(s): Linda Konnerth, Stephen Morey, Priyankoo Sarmah & Amos Teo |
