The background to this publication is that a summer school on Graham Greene, one in an ongoing series on the modern novel, was held by the University of New England, through the offices of its Department of University Extension, from 14th to 16th January, 1972. Greene was chosen because of his stature and popularity as a writer with the general public, as well as in academic and literary circles. His output which ranges from short stories and novels to plays, verse and travelogues, has been supported by innumerable reviews and film versions of his work. Over the weekend in question the films, 'The Power and the Glory' and 'Our Man in Havana', were shown. The School was concerned to assess selected prose works and to attempt to judge his achievements and place him in contemporary literature, particularly in relation to Evelyn Waugh, whose 'Brideshead Revisited' was discussed, and reference was made to their lives and to the English Catholic temper between the wars.en
