Abstract: There is some merit in reviewing one's associations, experiences and career in late retirement, far removed from the day-to-day issues, crises, inter-personal relations and politics of the environment in which one worked. UNE was initially established as the New England University College (NEUC) of the University of Sydney, and enrolled its first students in 1938. It was the first university facility in Australia outside a capital city. It attracted the great majority of its students from northern NSW and the Hunter Valley - most of whom were on Teachers' College Scholarships. From its first intake it produced more than its share of graduates who distinguished themselves nationally and internationally.
