Abstract: The last decade has seen a resurgence of interest in the revival and maintenance of Aboriginal languages in Australia, where only 12 of 250-odd languages are currently being acquired by children as a first language. This paper provides an overview of the language maintenance and revival initiatives that have been tried and tested in that time; places them against the political and social contexts that have shaped them; and attempts an assessment of the relative successes of the strategies attempted.
