Piano scores have been regarded as artefacts with associated meanings illuminating the contexts surrounding their creation, function and application. Colonial piano scores have been examined to explore the various messages they convey about life in New South Wales during the nineteenth-century. Viewed from several different contexts, the list of piano scores selected for this project provides insights into several aspects of colonial society. From a historical perspective, they provide a record of settlement, military activity, growth and expansion in the colony. From an economic perspective, they highlight the establishment of a capitalist and consumer society through the development of trade operating from the colony and business and commercial activity within it. From a social perspective, they supply answers to questions about class, gender, nationality and race. From a cultural perspective, they provide a commentary on customs, dress, fashions, recreation and entertainment. From a musical perspective, they reflect much about the music industry in the colony, musical cultural preference and musical entertainment both in the public arena and in the home. Finally, from an Australian perspective, colonial piano scores bring to light evidence of the beginnings of a unique Australian identity and sense of nationhood. | Publication Type: | Thesis Doctoral | Fields of Research (FoR) 2008: | 190409 Musicology and Ethnomusicology | Socio-Economic Objective (SEO) 2008: | 950101 Music | Rights Statement: | Copyright 2007 - Christina Jennifer Whiteley | Open Access Embargo: | 2014 | HERDC Category Description: | T2 Thesis - Doctorate by Research |
