Anorexia nervosa is associated with a decreased likelihood of viral infection and a normal likelihood of bacterial infection. However, in anorexia nervosa, the ability to respond to and recover from bacterial infections is reduced. The cause of this is clear, although it may be related to a reduction in the ability of white blood cells to move to the site of infection as a result of impaired cytokine production. There is also a reduced febrile response to bacterial infection in anorexia nervosa.en
