Abstract: For over 40 years, the names 'Sesbania benthamiana' Domin, 'S. javanica' Miq. and 'S. sesban' (L.) Merr. have been applied to Australian plant specimens. A review of the types assigned to these taxa has resolved that the names 'S. javanica' Miq. and 'S. sesban' (L.) Merr. do not apply to species native to Australia and 'S. benthamiana' has been misapplied. The name 'S. burbidgei' is proposed to account for specimens previously identified as 'S. sesban' and 'S. muelleri' is proposed to account for specimens previously assigned as 'S. benthamiana'. The name 'S. benthamiana' is reapplied to material previously known as 'S. javanica'.
