Abstract: A zone contiguous to the territorial sea, extending no further than 24 nautical miles from the territorial sea baseline, in which the coastal state may exercise limited control with respect to customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitation laws. Australia has declared a contiguous zone. See 'Seas and Submerged Lands Act 1973' (Cth ); UN Convention on the Law of the Sea 1982 Art 33; 'Customs Act 1901' (Cth ); 'Migration Act 1958' (Cth).
