Abstract: Malthus earned bachelor's (1788) and master's (1791) degrees at Cambridge University and was elected to a fellowship at Jesus College, Cambridge, in 1793. He was ordained as a minister of the Church of England in 1789. In 1805, he was appointed professor of history and political economy at the East India College at Ilaileybury, near Elertford, a position he held until his death. Among his numerous books, pamphlets, and articles, the best known are 'An Essay on the Principle of Population' (1798, with subsequent editions in 1803, 1806, 1807, 1817, 1826) and 'Principles of Political Economy' (1820, with a posthumous edition, with many alterations, in 1836).
