Abstract |
This dataset supports a PhD thesis that examined hydrocarbon and metal contamination in the aquatic and riparian ecosystems of the eastern Niger Delta, Nigeria. Over six decades of crude oil exploration and exploitation in the region have resulted in significant environmental and socio-economic impact. Using indigenous baseline knowledge, aquatic-riparian ecosystems and a typical aquatic foodchain were assessed systematically for the first time through an integrated approach, also evaluating multiple biomarker responses for contamination effects. The outcomes provide contemporary data for proper ecological and human health risk assessment to support sound management decisions.
