English Abstract: The immigration history of Australia and the economic/scientific connections between German-speaking countries and Australia had and still have a major influence on the role of the German language in Australia. So there are different reasons for studying German in Australia. The most important reasons for learning this language are the learner’s partner and family, and their interest in the language and culture, as well as the enjoyment of language learning, travel plans, and professional goals. However, both the relatively large geographical distance of German-speaking countries as well as Australia’s growing economic, political and cultural interest in the Asia-pacific area have led to stagnating numbers of German learners in recent years.
