Abstract:

The website invites viewers to encounter aspects of the history and significance of the Maitland Hospital which is located in regional New South Wales, Australia. The hospital served the local community from the one site for over 170 years and, as such, its accretion of buildings, objects and stories document the history of the site and contribute to understanding and research about the history of public hospitals in New South Wales. In early 2022 the institution was relocated to a new site.

The website is part of a wider project initiated by NSW Health Infrastructure in partnership with Maitland City Council to document, interpret and share memories and material culture relating to the old site. It presents micro-histories about the site, its places and spaces, its people and its material culture. It also provides online encounters with the exhibition held at the Maitland Regional Art Gallery in 2021 which saw 10 artists providing their creative responses to the histories, emotions and memories embedded in the Maitland Hospital site.
