Economists around the world were saddened to hear of the passing of Zane Spindler in Cape Town at the end of 2008. This loss was particularly acutely felt in the South African academic economics community. Professor Spindler was a frequent visitor to South Africa, spent considerable periods as a visiting scholar at the Universities of Cape Town and Stellenbosch and had a wide circle of friends among South African economists. He will be sadly missed both as a valued friend and a fine scholar. Zane Spindler was born in New London, Wisconsin in the United States. He first graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a B.Sc (cum laude) and then attended Michigan State University, where he graduated successively with an MA and a PhD in economics. |
