Abstract

Prelude: Remembrances of lockdown thinking

This chapter started life in 2020 with the aim of talking about Baudelaire's verse and remembrance. Then, in the autumn of the COVID-19 pandemic, we had the unexpected chance to meet to discuss matters in Lombardy - one of the areas of Italy that had been hardest-hit in the spring - during the short hiatus between the first and the second wave. The world had become a very different place since we had gathered in Sydney at the end of 2019 for the annual conference of the Australian Society for French Studies. Back then, the main topics of discussion had been bushfires and the difficulty of finding a P90 mask to filter the smoky air.
