Abstract: This book has been developed out of a desire to contribute to the academic literature and knowledge of finance, and in particular, in relation to spreadsheet modelling techniques which are applied in the field. The work also contributes to the development of modelling for personal financial planning, particularly as it relates to life-cycle planning. Practitioners and students in these fields are also provided with a practical guide in the development of spreadsheet modelling. It will allow them to be able to calculate the financial problems from textbooks using the power of a spreadsheet. To enable this, the book guides the reader in the development of financial models primarily using the financial worksheet functions and formulas available in Microsoft Excel. The book is also a useful aid to understanding the principles of finance. AIM OF THE BOOK As well as contributing to the academic literature and knowledge of finance, the aim of the book is to equip you with the added dimension of being able to apply the knowledge you have already acquired through other learning processes to spreadsheet modelling, endeavouring to prepare you further for entry into the world of business and finance. I trust that you will enjoy working through this book and that you will become more confident in your ability to calculate normally complicated financial problems as you look at what you are able to achieve relatively simply using the spreadsheet models that you learn to develop. An added bonus is that on completion of your spreadsheet model, you will have a spreadsheet that you can take with you to use in the future.
