Title: | Teaching About Sound for Multimodal Literacy | Contributor(s): | Noad, Betty Jean (author) | Publication Date: | 2007 | Open Access: | Yes | Handle Link: | https://hdl.handle.net/1959.11/4074 | Abstract: | The emergence of digital technologies has changed the design of texts and our literate practices so that we now interpret and construct texts which have written, visual, audio and spatial dimensions for making meaning, that is, multimodal texts. Prominent researchers (Kress 2000; The New London Group 2000) argued that literacy should be redefined as multiliteracies to acknowledge the multiplicity of communication channels and media, and the cultural and linguistic diversity that impact on textual meanings. Current definitions of multimodal literacy (Jewitt & Kress 2003) which acknowledge all modes (e.g. image, text, sound, movement) as significant for communication, accordingly require explicit teaching that provides all students with resources for the interpretation and construction of multimodal texts in classrooms. This study contributes to knowledge about the nature and function of the meaning-making resources of sound, which is required to realise multimodal literacy. | Publication Type: | Conference Publication | Conference Details: | Bridging the Gap between Ideas and Doing Research 2006: Inaugural Postgraduate Research Conference, Armidale, Australia, 8th - 11th August, 2006 | Source of Publication: | Bridging the Gap between Ideas and Doing Research: Proceedings of the Inaugural Postgraduate Research Conference, p. 249-265 | Publisher: | Australian College of Educators | Place of Publication: | Deakin West, Australia | Fields of Research (FoR) 2008: | 130204 English and Literacy Curriculum and Pedagogy (excl LOTE, ESL and TESOL) | Socio-Economic Objective (SEO) 2008: | 930299 Teaching and Instruction not elsewhere classified | Peer Reviewed: | Yes | HERDC Category Description: | E1 Refereed Scholarly Conference Publication | Publisher/associated links: | http://www.une.edu.au/faculties/professions/Resources/2006proceedings.pdf http://trove.nla.gov.au/version/38825080 |
