Abstract: Established in 1908 by George Swinburne, a former mayor of Hawthorn and Victorian parliamentarian, the Eastern Suburbs Technical College in Hawthorn offered classes in carpentry, plumbing and blacksmithing. The first students enrolled in 1909, and a boys' junior technical school and the first girls' technical school in Victoria were established soon after. The institution was renamed Swinburne Technical College in 1913 in honour of its founder.
