Abstract:

Genetic relationships between number born alive (NBA) and meat quality traits were studied in Australian pigs. Meat quality traits investigated were colour of the longissimus dorsi muscle, colour of the superior spiralis muscle, pH measured 45 minutes post mortem (pH-45), pH measured 24 hours post mortem (pH-24) and drip loss percentage. (Co)variances were estimated using a derivative-free Restricted Maximum Likelihood procedure fitting an animal model.
