Abstract: To engage with the nursing and midwifery literature and effectively explore questions in these domains, an understanding of qualitative approaches as well as quantitative approaches is necessary. This chapter defines qualitative research, compares qualitative and quantitative approaches, explores various ways in which qualitative research can be classified, and identifies and discusses phases of qualitative research processes. While there are multiple ways to qualitatively explore health issues, this chapter focuses largely on the interpretive paradigm.
