The paper analyses a survey of university teachers, follow-up interviews and secondary academic numeracy data. Initial findings are presented in terms of the nature of academic numeracy required in the subjects offered and support strategies provided. The study suggests that support services are not contributing well to attrition in subjects requiring academic numeracy. Some effects are due to the diversity of the student body and further research is needed on both localised and cross-university approaches that focus on student’s goals and personal agency. | Publication Type: | Conference Publication | Conference Details: | MERGA 42: 42nd Annual Conference of Mathematics Education Research Group of Australasia, Perth, Australia, 30th June - 4th July, 2019 | Source of Publication: | Mathematics Education Research: Impacting Practice (Proceedings of the 42nd annual conference of the Mathematics Education Research Group of Australasia), p. 779-786 | Publisher: | Mathematics Education Research Group of Australasia (MERGA) | Place of Publication: | Adelaide, Australia | Fields of Research (FoR) 2008: | 130399 Specialist Studies in Education not elsewhere classified | Fields of Research (FoR) 2020: | 390303 Higher education | Socio-Economic Objective (SEO) 2008: | 930102 Learner and Learning Processes | Socio-Economic Objective (SEO) 2020: | 160101 Early childhood education | Peer Reviewed: | Yes | HERDC Category Description: | E1 Refereed Scholarly Conference Publication | Publisher/associated links: | https://merga.net.au/Public/Publications/Annual_Conference_Proceedings/2019-MERGA-conference-proceedings.aspx |
