This entry provides an introduction to the editorial (or simply “political”) cartoon, from its origins in the print revolution of the early modern period, through to the digital age. Particular attention is given to key technologies and formats by which the cartoon has been created and disseminated. Important practitioners- “cartoonists” as well as “caricaturists” -are also highlighted; as are the developments in the scholarly appreciation of the cartoon and its value as a form of visual journalism, as well as an art form combining image and text.en
