Abstract: Despite the need for effective environmental education in Kiribati, attempts in the mid 1970s to introduce an Environmental Studies programme at the primary level met with only limited success. This paper examines the problems associated with the original programme and reports on a new initiative which may help establish Environmental Studies as a credible subject in the primary curriculum.
