As in many educational systems many teachers in Fiji see student tests mainly as selection devices. This is understandable given the recent history of testing in that country. However, an enlightened Ministry recently revived the use of a battery of achievement tests fir class 6 students, and commissioned the development of a parallel-form primary science test for inclusion in the battery. This was done, partly, to show teachers how such tests can be used at the classroom level to improve the teaching-learning process. This paper discusses the development of the science test in the context of pilot trial results.en
