Sexual health is multifaceted and is influenced by biological, psychological, social, cultural and environmental factors (Rosenthal & Browning, 2005). Although all individuals can be at risk of detrimental sexual health outcomes, young people are particularly at risk of sexual health adversity. Young people can be generally defined as those aged between 10 and 24 years of age (World Health Organization [WHO], 2006). During this stage of development in the life span, individuals undergo various physical, cognitive, psychological and social changes that influence their lives and prepare them for adulthood (Rew, 2005). Throughout this time, puberty is also experienced, sexual identity develops and new relationships are formed (Rosenthal & Browning, 2005).en
