Abstract: Brian Houghton Hodgson (1857: 321-327) was the first linguist to report on the Darai language, which he mentioned under the names "Daḍhī", "Dare" and "Dahi". Later, George Grierson (1916, IX (IV): 18-19) wrote disparagingly of the Darai, saying that "all that they do is to speak bad Khas-kurā". In fact, the Darai language is far more interesting than defective Nepali could ever be.
