Abstract: In this chapter we introduce the nature of rural and remote nursing. When you complete this chapter you should be able to: • identify the nature of rural communities and the major factors that influence their health status • outline some of the challenges of providing healthcare in rural and remote locations • describe the characteristics of rural and remote nursing and the challenges and rewards of the role • identify the continuing challenge for nursing in addressing the health needs of rural and remote communities.
