Title: | New breeding, distribution and prey records for the Pygmy Eagle 'Hieraeetus weiskei' | Contributor(s): | Bishop, David (author); Diamond, Jared (author); Hornbuckle, Jonathan (author); Debus, Steve J S (author) | Publication Date: | 2016 | Open Access: | Yes | DOI: | 10.20938/afo33224226 | Handle Link: | https://hdl.handle.net/1959.11/19806 | Abstract: | An active nest of the Pygmy Eagle 'Hieraaetus weiskei' is described, providing the first documented observation of a downy chick in late January and hence an indicative laying date of late November/early December. The first documented record of this species for Waigeo Island (West Papua Province) is presented. A prey item being carried by a Pygmy Eagle is identified as a probable Brown (Slender-billed) Cuckoo-Dove 'Macropygia amboinensis', and another Pygmy Eagle had eaten a Mountain Fruit-Dove 'Ptilinopus bellus'. | Publication Type: | Journal Article | Source of Publication: | Australian Field Ornithology, v.33, p. 224-226 | Publisher: | BirdLife Australia | Place of Publication: | Australia | ISSN: | 1448-0107 | Fields of Research (FoR) 2008: | 060809 Vertebrate Biology | Fields of Research (FoR) 2020: | 310914 Vertebrate biology | Socio-Economic Objective (SEO) 2008: | 960806 Forest and Woodlands Flora, Fauna and Biodiversity | Socio-Economic Objective (SEO) 2020: | 180606 Terrestrial biodiversity | Peer Reviewed: | Yes | HERDC Category Description: | C1 Refereed Article in a Scholarly Journal | Publisher/associated links: | http://www.birdlife.org.au/afo/index.php/afo/article/view/2059 |
