Title: | Dispositional Scepticism, Attitudes to Science, and Belief in the Paranormal | Contributor(s): | Irwin, Harvey J (author); Dagnall, Neil (author); Drinkwater, Kenneth (author) | Publication Date: | 2016 | Handle Link: | https://hdl.handle.net/1959.11/19773 | Abstract: | An online survey was undertaken to examine the relationship between the intensity of beliefs in paranormal phenomena and two facets of a scientific worldview, namely, an appreciation of the values of science and a disposition to presumptive scepticism. A sample of 202 British residents participated in the survey. The findings indicate that paranormal believers have both a relatively low regard for the values of science and weak dispositional scepticism. These findings are discussed in terms of the worldview hypothesis of paranormal belief. | Publication Type: | Journal Article | Source of Publication: | Australian Journal of Parapsychology, 16(2), p. 117-131 | Publisher: | Australian Institute of Parapsychological Research Inc | Place of Publication: | Australia | ISSN: | 1445-2308 | Fields of Research (FoR) 2008: | 179999 Psychology and Cognitive Sciences not elsewhere classified | Fields of Research (FoR) 2020: | 529999 Other psychology not elsewhere classified | Socio-Economic Objective (SEO) 2008: | 970117 Expanding Knowledge in Psychology and Cognitive Sciences | Socio-Economic Objective (SEO) 2020: | 280121 Expanding knowledge in psychology | Peer Reviewed: | Yes | HERDC Category Description: | C1 Refereed Article in a Scholarly Journal |
