Abstract: The people of Elis, known as Eleians, were the custodians of the sanctuary of Zeus at Olympia. They may have been allied the the Spartans in an Archaic Period war against Argos. During the Classical and Hellenistic Periods, beginning with their contribution of triremes to the Peloponnesian fleet during the Second Peloponnesian War, they took part in various wars among the Greeks, Macedonians, and Romans.
