Title: | Teaching For Understanding: Spotlighting the Blythe and Associates Pedagogical Model | Contributor(s): | Kivunja, Charles (author) | Publication Date: | 2015 | Open Access: | Yes | Handle Link: | https://hdl.handle.net/1959.11/18160 | Open Access Link: | http://ejournals.library.ualberta.ca/index.php/cpi/article/view/25953 | Abstract: | This paper explains what we mean by understanding, particularly in order to achieve deep learning. To so do, the paper initially reviews the relevant literature produced by some of the major thinkers in the field of assessment and measurement. It places special emphasis on The Teaching for Understanding Framework developed by Tina Blythe and Associates which challenges standard practices regarding student evaluation. The paper then uses this model to discuss several strategies that we can use to teach for understanding. Finally, the paper concludes by articulating that while there is no one way to teach for understanding, the use of well researched frameworks offers opportunities for pedagogues to effectively teach in ways where goal setting and evaluation can be applied in order to achieve a deep understanding of the curricula topic under consideration. | Publication Type: | Journal Article | Source of Publication: | Cultural and Pedagogical Inquiry, 7(1), p. 84-99 | Publisher: | University of Alberta Libraries | Place of Publication: | Canada | ISSN: | 1916-3460 | Fields of Research (FoR) 2008: | 130202 Curriculum and Pedagogy Theory and Development 130103 Higher Education 130205 Humanities and Social Sciences Curriculum and Pedagogy (excl.
