local.abstract.english | This chapter included in the collective volume titled "Specialised Curricula for students with autism" and was prepared with funding provided by the European Union and the Greek Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs. This chapter presents an overview of the most effective methods for successful classroom management, with a special emphasis on functional analysis of behaviour (FAB). The first part of the chapter is focused on the systematic observation and analysis of behaviours in different contexts, whereas the second part describes the positive behaviour support approach, which is concentrated on the teaching of new skills to replace conventional methods applied for the elimination of challenging behaviours. The main advantage of positive behaviour support is that it is focused on the development of new functional skills. Special consideration is also given to the structuring of the environment to match the learning style of the student with autism and increase its choice and independence. The central tenet of this chapter is that traditional behavioural strategies can be tried, once positive behaviour plans have failed to modify challenging behaviours. | en |
