Abstract: This chapter traces some relevant history of rural schooling in New South Wales, describes contemporary structures in rural primary schools, and summarises many of the contextual issues that have emerged from our research. These issues will be revisited in more detail in later chapters but are mentioned here to provide a foundational overview of some of what the reader can expect to explore in later parts of the book.
