Abstract: I was teaching a somewhat uninterested physics class at a high school in Toowoomba when a flustered Deputy Principal burst into the room. "There's a Professor from Armidale who wants to talk to you", he shouted. Bear in mind that this was 1959, and trunk-line telephonic communication was used infrequently because connections were poor and the cost per minute was close to astronomical. Telegrams were the usual mode of urgent communication. With this in mind I ran the 200 yards or so to the office. At the end of the phone a gravelly voice croaked, "Hello, Creagh ... Webster says you know something about physics. I want you to come to work with me in Armidale". This was my first contact with Professor Jack Somerville, FRS. I knew nothing about him, and little about the University of New England; what little I did know was gained from boozy gatherings following UQ-UNE cricket matches, and much of those conversations centred on the fun and games and individual exploits which occurred in the residences of the New England University College/University of New England.
