The Pomegranate Cycle responds to the myth of the Greek fertility goddess, Persephone, to engage with issues of violence against women. It critiques opera's reliance on stories about gendered violence, perpetuated in the trope of the dying soprano: this Persephone lives and heals following her tragic violation.
