HERDC Category Description: | B1 Chapter in a Scholarly Book | Publisher/associated links: | http://nla.gov.au/anbd.bib-an53606694 | English Abstract: | This work examines the situation of lexical borrowing in contemporary Russian. In particular, it discusses the meaning of the term 'tolerantnyj' which has recently significantly risen in its use. Its meaning is compared with the meaning of the English term 'tolerant' as a source of borrowing and the traditional Russian term 'terpimyj'. A detailed semantic analysis demonstrates that although 'tolerant' and 'terpimyj' are translational equivalents, their meanings do differ and reflect different cultural attitudes across the two societies involved. The work also shows that the meaning of the new Russian term 'tolerantnyj' does not fully coincide with the meaning of the English term 'tolerant', as it reflects the Russian value system. The explications of the terms under investigation are constructed in the Natural Semantic Metalanguage. | Editor: | Editor(s): L L Fedorova |
