The present book may well be regarded by the reader, whether New Englander or a curious researcher into Australian society and its modes of higher education, as a form of celebratory chronicle of distinctive times and of a unique regional place - one already highly significant in the great twentieth century expansion, evolution and devolution of tertiary education, well away from the state capitals of Australia. ... We can report that most contributors have sought to catch the spirit and style of their earlier days here, even as we are much in harmony with the other project alongside ours, that concerned to celebrate the sesquicentenary of local government in the cathedral city and its nearer surrounding district. For the two are ever coming together more and more through graduations, processions, 'prosh' styles of parades, sport, denominational spheres, the theatre, as well as through work, mutual respect, and fine shared community projects, both cultural and recreational.en
